“We can no longer afford to take that which was good in the past and simply call it our heritage, to discard the bad and simply think of it as a dead load which by itself time will bury in oblivion.”— Hannah Arendt (1906-1975), The Origins of Totalitarianism (1951), ix.
I also have two years of industry experience as a professional genealogist. I worked as an associate genealogist for AncestryProGenealogists, the research firm of Ancestry, in Salt Lake City, Utah. I conducted archival research for clients by locating, transcribing, and copying genealogical records from the Family History Library and digital collections, examined genetic test results, and then summarized the research findings by writing genealogy reports.
At Ancestry, I developed an interest in Southern genealogy and African American family history and soon joined a team of Southern specialists and attended a twelve-week Southern research course which focused on county-level records such as land, probate, tax, and court documents. With this additional training I developed an expertise in Southern brick-wall cases, burned counties, and the American Civil War.
